BSc(Econ) Economics and Finance
About this course
Economics and finance together provide the analytical foundation for understanding how markets, institutions, and policies shape economic outcomes at every scale, from the decisions of individual consumers and firms to the dynamics of global financial systems. Economics asks how resources are allocated, how prices are determined, and how policy interventions affect behaviour and welfare. Finance focuses on how financial assets are priced, how capital is raised and invested, and how risk is managed across portfolios, organisations, and markets. Both disciplines are central to understanding the phenomena that drive the news, from interest rate decisions and financial market volatility to international trade disputes and inequality. At Queen Mary University of London, you will study the economy as a whole while also analysing the behaviour and motivations of individuals and companies. The programme covers microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, corporate finance, financial markets, and investment theory, developing both the theoretical understanding and the quantitative skills needed to engage with real financial and economic data. It runs over four years full-time. Graduates of economics and finance degrees are among the most sought-after in the social sciences. Many go into investment banking, asset management, financial analysis, economic consultancy, the civil service, and central banking. The quantitative rigour and analytical discipline the degree develops are also valued in technology, data science, and consulting. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in economics, finance, or related fields, where the foundations built at undergraduate level open access to specialist and research-oriented programmes at leading institutions worldwide.
