BA East Asian Studies and History
About this course
East Asian studies and history is a combination that develops specialist knowledge of the cultures, societies, and histories of East Asia, primarily China, Japan, and Korea, alongside the broader analytical and research skills that historical study cultivates. East Asian studies draws on language learning, political science, cultural analysis, and the study of literature and religion to give you an insider perspective on one of the most dynamic and consequential regions in contemporary world affairs. History trains you to read sources critically, to understand change over time, and to construct evidence-based arguments about why the world is the way it is. At the School of Oriental and African Studies, this three-year, full-time degree is taught at an institution with unparalleled specialist expertise in the languages and cultures of Asia and Africa, giving you access to some of the leading scholars and library resources in the field. A foundation year is available for students who benefit from additional preparation before entering the degree proper. You will develop language skills in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean alongside your engagement with the history and culture of the region, and you will study East Asian history in depth from a perspective that centres the region itself rather than approaching it through a Western lens. A typical entry tariff of 120 points reflects the accessibility of a programme designed to develop genuine specialists from a range of backgrounds. Graduates go on to work in international business, diplomacy, journalism, translation and interpreting, cultural organisations, international development, teaching, publishing, and a wide range of roles in organisations with interests in or connections to East Asia. Postgraduate study in East Asian studies, history, international relations, or area studies is a well-supported further step for those seeking specialist expertise or academic careers.
