Earth sciences is the study of the planet we live on: its structure, processes, history and future. It is an interdisciplinary field that draws on geology, geography, climatology, hydrology, chemistry and physics to understand how the Earth system works, how it has changed over geological time, and how human activity is now altering it in ways that carry profound implications for natural hazards, resource availability, climate and long-term sustainability. Earth scientists generate the knowledge on which decisions about energy, water, land use and environmental risk depend.
