About this course

Earth and planetary sciences is a discipline of extraordinary scope, examining the physical and chemical processes that have shaped our planet over billions of years and that continue to drive geological, climatic, and environmental change today. It encompasses the study of rocks, minerals, and the deep structure of the Earth, the dynamics of plate tectonics and volcanism, the chemistry of oceans and atmospheres, the record of past climates preserved in ice cores and sediments, and the comparative study of planetary bodies in our solar system. In an era of climate change and growing demand for the Earth's mineral resources, the discipline has a particular urgency. At the University of Manchester, the MEarthSci Earth and Planetary Sciences programme is a four-year integrated masters degree that includes international study at one of the university's worldwide partner universities during the third year. A foundation year is available for students who need additional preparation. The programme combines geological fieldwork and laboratory analysis with physical and chemical modelling, and the international study element gives you the opportunity to experience different geological environments and academic traditions. The programme also includes a sandwich year and work placement provision. The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points. Graduates work in the energy industry, mining and minerals, environmental consultancy, geotechnical engineering, climate science, and government geological surveys. The integrated masters qualification is well regarded by employers in the geosciences and provides a strong foundation for postgraduate research at PhD level in geology, geophysics, atmospheric science, or planetary science. Many graduates also pursue professional registration with the Geological Society or other relevant bodies.
