About this course

Earth and environmental science investigates the planet we live on: how it formed, how it changes, and how human activity is altering systems that took billions of years to develop. It is a discipline that combines geology, physical geography, atmospheric science, oceanography and ecology, asking questions that range from the ancient, how did the Himalayas form, to the urgent, how will rising sea levels affect coastal communities over the next century. The discipline has rarely been more relevant than it is now. At the University of Hull, the three-year full-time degree develops your understanding of geological processes, environmental systems and the interactions between them. You will study the structure and history of the Earth, the processes that shape landscapes, the dynamics of the atmosphere and oceans, and the ways in which human activity is affecting natural systems. Fieldwork is central to the discipline, and you will develop practical skills in mapping, sampling, data collection and environmental assessment that are essential for professional practice. The ability to read and interpret both physical evidence and quantitative data is a core part of your training. Hull's location in Yorkshire gives ready access to a range of geological and environmental settings, from the chalk landscapes of the Yorkshire Wolds to the dynamic coastline of the Holderness shore, one of the fastest-eroding coastlines in Europe. These are real-world laboratories that bring the subject to life beyond the classroom. Graduates of earth and environmental science work in environmental consultancy, the energy sector, mining and minerals, water management, government agencies, coastal management and conservation. Climate science, environmental regulation and sustainability roles are growing areas of employment. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in geoscience, environmental management or related fields, including doctoral research.
