FdA Early Childhood Studies
About this course
Early childhood studies is the academic examination of the first years of life, drawing on developmental psychology, sociology, education, health and social policy to understand how young children learn, develop and thrive, and what conditions support or hinder them. The early years are now understood to be among the most significant in shaping long-term outcomes across health, education and wellbeing, making expertise in this field both intellectually compelling and practically important. At Roehampton University, this two-year full-time programme is designed for students who already have relevant experience or partial qualifications in the field and want to develop their academic understanding and professional credentials. It develops the knowledge and professional skills needed to work effectively in the early childhood sector, including understanding child development, theories of play, family and community engagement, safeguarding, inclusive practice and the policy and legislative frameworks that govern provision for young children. You will develop reflective and research-based thinking about practice, building the capacity to evaluate evidence, question assumptions and contribute to the improvement of services for young children and their families. Communication, observation and the ability to advocate for children and families are developed alongside theoretical grounding in child development and social policy. Graduates go on to careers in early years education, childcare management, children's social care, family support, early intervention services and children's charities. The academic qualification is valued for progression into management and leadership roles in the sector, as well as for those who want to pursue further study in education, social work or early childhood policy. Some go on to postgraduate study or professional qualification in teaching, social work or educational psychology.
