BA Early Childhood and Global Philosophy & Worldviews
About this course
Early Childhood and Global Philosophy and Worldviews is an unusual combination that brings together the developmental science and professional practice of early childhood education with a genuinely world-spanning philosophical enquiry. Early childhood studies examines how children from birth to eight develop, learn, and flourish, drawing on psychology, sociology, and education to understand what children need and how those needs can best be met. Global philosophy and worldviews explores the great philosophical traditions of humanity, from African and Chinese philosophy to Hindu, Islamic, Jewish, Buddhist, and secular Western thought, asking what different cultures have believed about truth, value, ethics, and what it means to be human. At Liverpool Hope University, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and work placements, making it practically and internationally oriented. The early childhood strand develops your professional knowledge and skills for working with young children and families, while the global philosophy and worldviews strand broadens your intellectual horizons considerably, exposing you to ways of thinking that are often absent from narrower disciplinary programmes. Together, the two subjects develop practitioners who are both technically competent in early years practice and intellectually curious about the deeper questions of human development, ethics, and cultural diversity that underpin any genuinely inclusive approach to education and care. Graduates go on to careers in early years education and care, children's centres, local authority children's services, international education, teaching, social work, interfaith education, and community development. The global philosophy and worldviews element opens particular pathways in multicultural education, interfaith dialogue, and roles that require cultural sensitivity and philosophical depth. Postgraduate study in early childhood education, philosophy, global education, or social work is a well-established route for those who wish to develop their expertise further.
