About this course

Drama and religious studies might seem an unlikely pairing, but they share a long history: theatre has its roots in ritual, and the great questions of religion, about meaning, mortality, transcendence, and how people live together, have always found expression in performance. Studying both at once gives you a genuinely distinctive vantage point on human culture, creative practice, and the beliefs and stories through which communities make sense of their world. At Liverpool Hope University this three-year, full-time programme allows you to explore performance in the heart of Liverpool, a city with a rich theatrical and cultural life, while also engaging with the traditions, texts, and ethical questions of religious studies, theology, and spirituality. In the drama strand you will trace the origins of theatre, develop your own practice as a maker and performer, and refine your critical understanding of performance from classical traditions to contemporary work. In the religion, theology, and spirituality strand you will study the major world religions, the history of Christian theology, and the philosophical and ethical questions that have shaped religious thought. A sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement are all built into the programme, giving you opportunities to develop professional experience and an international perspective alongside your academic and creative formation. Graduates of this combination move into careers across theatre, education, community arts, chaplaincy, social and pastoral work, journalism, broadcasting, and the third sector. Many enter teaching, where a background in both drama and religious studies is particularly valuable. Others move into arts management, community engagement, or advocacy roles in organisations connected to faith communities, social justice, or cultural life. Postgraduate study in drama, theatre studies, theology, or education is a natural continuation for those who want to deepen their expertise or pursue a particular area of research or professional practice.
