About this course

Drama and production is a discipline that develops you as both a theatrical practitioner and a maker of performance across a range of contexts. It places creative practice and production knowledge in close relationship, recognising that theatre and performance are collaborative arts that depend on the skills of many different contributors, from writers, directors, and performers to designers, stage managers, and technical crews. Understanding both the artistic and the organisational dimensions of making performance is what the degree is designed to develop. At the University of the Highlands and Islands you will study part-time, taking fewer course units per week than a full-time student and progressing through the programme at a pace suited to your other commitments. The programme allows you to study most days of the week in a structure that moves through modules sequentially, making it a genuinely accessible route for students managing work or family alongside their studies. You will develop your understanding of drama and theatre history, dramatic literature, performance practice, and the practical and technical aspects of production across the programme. The Highlands and Islands context, with its distinctive culture and landscape, shapes the creative environment in which you work and connects your studies to a region with a rich tradition of performance and storytelling. Graduates of drama and production work across the theatre, television, events, and creative industries. Roles in stage management, production coordination, technical theatre, community and applied drama, education, arts administration, and directing are all common directions. The practical and collaborative skills developed on the degree, including project planning, communication, problem-solving under pressure, and creative leadership, are also valued in roles outside the arts, including events management, project management, and communications. Further study at postgraduate level in theatre, performance, drama education, or applied theatre is available for those who wish to deepen their practice or pursue academic and research careers.
