BSc Digital Media
About this course
Digital Media is a discipline that addresses the creation, distribution, and critical understanding of content in the forms that now dominate how people communicate, inform, entertain, and organise themselves: websites, social platforms, video, podcasting, interactive experiences, and the data-driven systems through which those forms are delivered. It is a field in which technical skill, creative thinking, and critical literacy about the social and cultural functions of media all need to work together. At the University of the West of England, Bristol, this three-year, full-time degree develops practical competencies in digital content creation and production alongside a broader understanding of how digital media industries operate and how digital forms have transformed communication and culture. You will build technical skills in areas relevant to contemporary media practice while developing the critical and analytical thinking that allows you to reflect on what digital media does and what it means. The degree includes a sandwich year and work placements, giving you substantial professional experience within the media and communications industries and the opportunity to build the portfolio and contacts that digital employers value. Graduates pursue careers across digital media production, social media management, content creation, UX and web design, digital marketing, broadcasting, journalism, podcasting, and the broader creative and communications industries. The combination of technical capability and critical understanding that the degree builds is valuable wherever digital content is created, managed, or analysed. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in media, communications, digital culture, or creative industries, for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or move into research and education.
