MA Digital Media & Information Studies/Politics
About this course
Digital media and information studies combined with politics is a degree that could not be more timely. The relationship between digital media, information environments, and political life has become one of the defining issues of our age, from the role of social media platforms in elections and public debate to the politics of algorithmic governance, digital surveillance, and the spread of misinformation. Understanding both the technological and political dimensions of these phenomena requires exactly the combination of perspectives this degree provides. At the University of Glasgow, this four-year, full-time degree allows you to explore the creation, use, and impact of digital content and information in society while developing the analytical tools of political science to understand the power structures and governance questions that shape that landscape. Digital media and information studies brings a humanities perspective to the issues of the digital age, examining how technologies are developed, adopted, and contested in social and cultural contexts. The politics component develops your understanding of power, institutions, policy, and democratic theory. Together they provide a framework for understanding phenomena such as platform regulation, digital rights, political communication, and information disorder that neither discipline addresses fully alone. A year abroad is embedded in the programme. The typical entry tariff of 200 points reflects high academic expectations. Graduates of this combination work in journalism, communications, policy, technology regulation, political consulting, academic research, public sector digital strategy, and the growing field of information governance. Many also pursue postgraduate study in media studies, political science, information science, or science and technology studies. The combination of humanistic and political thinking about technology is increasingly valued in a world where governing digital systems has become a central political challenge.
