BA Digital Media and Communications
About this course
Digital media and communications is a field that addresses how digital technologies have transformed the production, distribution and consumption of information and culture. From social media and streaming platforms to podcasts, interactive journalism and digital advertising, the ways in which organisations and individuals communicate are being remade by digital tools and platforms at a pace that makes the ability to understand and work across these environments one of the most valuable skill sets available to graduates. At the University of Stirling you will develop both the critical understanding and the practical competence needed to engage professionally with digital media. You will examine how digital platforms shape communication, how media industries are adapting to digital disruption, how audiences engage with digital content and how organisations use digital channels to reach and interact with their stakeholders. Alongside this critical and contextual knowledge you will develop practical skills in digital content creation, communications strategy and the use of digital tools and platforms. The programme runs over four years full time, reflecting the Scottish honours degree structure, and includes a year abroad, extending the full course and giving you the opportunity to study digital media in an international context. You will develop skills in media analysis, content strategy, digital storytelling, data literacy and professional communication. The ability to understand digital media critically and to work with it practically is a combination that employers across many sectors value. Graduates from digital media and communications programmes move into careers in digital marketing, content creation, journalism, communications management, public relations, social media management, broadcasting and digital publishing. The breadth of the digital economy means graduates are employed across a wide range of industries. Postgraduate study in communications, digital media, journalism or related fields is also a route taken by those seeking specialist expertise.
