BEng Design, Innovation and Creative Engineering
About this course
Design, innovation and creative engineering is an interdisciplinary degree that recognises that the most significant challenges of the twenty-first century cannot be solved by any single discipline alone. Engineering provides the technical capability to build solutions, design offers the human-centred thinking to ensure those solutions work for the people who use them, and innovation brings the entrepreneurial and creative frameworks to translate both into real-world products, services and systems. Bringing them together produces graduates who can navigate the full spectrum from idea to implementation. At Queen Mary University of London, this four-year programme addresses the limitations of both engineering alone and design alone, building a curriculum that develops technical capability, creative thinking and the ability to make ideas real through the right combination of materials, processes and imagination. You will work on project-based challenges that require you to draw on multiple disciplines simultaneously, developing the collaborative, analytical and creative skills that modern employers in technology, product development and innovation value. Queen Mary's location in London places you in proximity to a wide range of design, technology and creative organisations. Graduates from design, innovation and creative engineering programmes are well placed for careers in product design, engineering consultancy, design technology, innovation management, entrepreneurship and a range of roles in organisations where the boundary between engineering and design is deliberately blurred. Technology companies, product development firms, user experience teams, creative agencies and innovation labs are common destinations. Many graduates also move into start-up culture, using the combination of technical and creative skills to develop new products and ventures. Postgraduate study in design engineering, innovation management or a specialist technical field is available for those who want to develop further expertise.
