BA Danish and Russian
About this course
Danish and Russian represent two distinct but equally rich European linguistic and cultural traditions. Danish connects you to the Scandinavian world, with its distinctive literary, philosophical, and social democratic heritage, and to a contemporary society widely regarded as a leader in design, sustainability, and quality of life. Russian opens access to one of the great literary traditions in world history, the works of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, and Pushkin among them, alongside a culture and political history of enormous global consequence, and a language that remains significant far beyond the borders of Russia itself. At University College London, this four-year BA in Danish and Russian is a joint honours programme split equally between your two languages, taking modules in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and translation alongside cultural topics including literature, history, film, linguistics, and politics. The wide variety of modules available allows you to tailor your degree around your own areas of interest within both languages. A year abroad, split between two countries where your languages are spoken, is a central feature of the programme, providing the extended immersive experience in both Danish and Russian contexts that is essential for genuine linguistic proficiency and cultural understanding. Graduates from Danish and Russian programmes are well placed for careers in the diplomatic service, international organisations, journalism, translation and interpretation, business with Scandinavian or Russian-speaking partners, academic research, and the cultural sector. The combination is rare and therefore particularly distinctive on any graduate's profile. Many graduates also move into professions where the transferable skills of a modern languages degree, rigorous reading, precise writing, and cultural adaptability, are valued even without direct use of the languages. Postgraduate study in Slavonic and East European studies, Scandinavian studies, translation, or international relations is a natural continuation.
