About this course
Danish and Finnish is an unusually distinctive language combination, bringing together two Northern European languages that belong to entirely different language families but are associated with two of the world's most successful and innovative societies. Danish is a North Germanic language, mutually intelligible to a significant degree with Norwegian and Swedish, spoken in Denmark and parts of Germany, and a gateway to a nation with a celebrated approach to design, welfare and democratic culture. Finnish, by contrast, belongs to the Finno-Ugric family and is structurally unlike most European languages, challenging to learn but deeply rewarding, and central to a culture with remarkable achievements in education, technology and literature. At University College London, which has significant strength in Scandinavian and other European language studies, this four-year full-time programme develops your proficiency in both languages to an advanced level. You will study the grammars, phonological systems and written forms of Danish and Finnish through intensive language tuition, while also engaging with the literatures, histories and contemporary societies of Denmark and Finland. UCL's research environment and London's cosmopolitan professional networks provide a stimulating context for this distinctive combination. Graduates with proficiency in both Danish and Finnish are in an unusual position in the graduate market.
