BSc Cyber Security
About this course
Cyber security is the discipline concerned with protecting digital systems, networks, data and infrastructure from unauthorised access, disruption and attack. As organisations and governments depend ever more heavily on digital technologies, and as the range and sophistication of threats continues to grow, the demand for professionals who understand both how attacks are carried out and how defences are built has become one of the most pressing workforce needs in the technology sector and beyond. At Birmingham City University, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you the opportunity to gain direct professional experience in security roles before you graduate. You will study the technical foundations of cyber security, including network security, cryptography, operating systems, penetration testing, ethical hacking and secure software development. You will also engage with the governance, risk management and legal dimensions of security, since protecting digital assets is not only a technical challenge but an organisational and regulatory one. The programme develops your ability to think like both an attacker and a defender, which is the core intellectual skill of effective security practice. You will work on practical challenges and simulations, developing hands-on competence alongside theoretical understanding. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, attention to detail and the ability to communicate technical risks clearly to non-technical stakeholders are all developed through the programme. Graduates go into careers in cyber security analysis, penetration testing, security engineering, incident response, digital forensics, risk management, security consulting and network security across a wide range of sectors, including finance, defence, healthcare, government and technology. Some go on to postgraduate study in cyber security, computer science or information security management, or pursue professional certifications alongside their career development.
