About this course
Criminology is the systematic study of crime, criminal behaviour, and the institutions that society creates to respond to them. It is a discipline rooted in social science, drawing on sociology, psychology, law, and political theory to examine why crime occurs, how it is defined and measured, who is most affected by it, and whether the criminal justice system achieves its stated goals. Far from being a purely descriptive exercise, criminology asks searching critical questions about the fairness of law enforcement, the effectiveness of punishment, and the relationship between crime and the social conditions that produce it. At Birmingham Newman University, this three-year, full-time programme offers a critical and thought-provoking engagement with crime and criminal justice that is grounded in social awareness and ethical reflection.
