BA Criminology and Psychology with foundation year
About this course
Criminology and psychology together offer a rigorous framework for understanding crime both as a social phenomenon and as an expression of individual psychology. Criminology examines crime through the lens of social theory, policy, and criminal justice institutions, asking how societies define, measure, and respond to deviance. Psychology brings the focus inward, exploring the mental processes, developmental experiences, and environmental factors that shape human behaviour, including behaviour that harms others. Together they equip you to think about crime from multiple perspectives simultaneously. This four-year, full-time programme at Coventry includes a foundation year, providing additional preparation for those who need it before entering the main degree content. The course also includes a placement year and a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to build professional experience in a relevant setting and to engage with criminological and psychological questions from an international perspective. You will study forensic psychology, the psychology of crime, criminal justice policy, mental health in the justice system, and the use of psychological evidence in criminal proceedings, among other areas. The programme is designed with an eye on the practical skills needed in roles that involve crime prevention, rehabilitation, and justice work. Graduates pursue careers in the criminal justice system, probation service, police, victim support, social work, rehabilitation programmes, and mental health services. The combination of criminological and psychological training is particularly valuable in roles that require both an understanding of social context and an ability to work with individuals experiencing distress or offending behaviour. Those who wish to pursue professional psychology qualifications can use the degree as a stepping stone, subject to meeting British Psychological Society requirements. Further postgraduate study in forensic psychology, criminology, or social work is a common route for graduates seeking specialist professional qualifications.
