BA Criminology and Early Childhood (With Foundation Year)
About this course
Criminology and early childhood studies is a combination that reflects a genuine intersection in professional practice and policy. Criminology examines why crime happens, how it affects individuals and communities, and how societies respond through criminal justice systems. Early childhood studies focuses on child development, welfare, learning and the conditions that support children to thrive in their earliest years. The connection between the two is significant: adverse childhood experiences, poverty, neglect and early exposure to crime and violence are among the strongest predictors of later criminal behaviour, and many of the most effective interventions work by changing what happens in early life. At Liverpool Hope University, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement. You will explore how crime is defined and measured, who makes these decisions, why people commit crimes and what happens within the criminal justice system. Early childhood modules develop your understanding of child development, attachment, play, safeguarding, inclusive practice and the policy frameworks that shape provision for young children. The placement experiences across both disciplines allow you to apply your learning in real settings, including youth justice, social care and early years environments. Graduates from this combination pursue careers in youth justice, probation, social work, early years education and childcare, family support services, community development, voluntary sector organisations and policy roles. The breadth of the degree is well suited to roles that sit at the intersection of child welfare and crime prevention. Further study in criminology, social work, early childhood education or youth and community work is a common next step for those who want to qualify professionally or deepen a particular specialism.
