About this course

Crime and investigation is a subject that has grown well beyond its origins in criminology and policing studies. The investigation of crime now involves forensic scientists, digital analysts, intelligence officers, financial investigators, regulatory bodies, and many other professionals alongside traditional police detectives. This degree takes that breadth seriously, examining the nature of crime and the range of institutional responses to it across different social and professional contexts. At Huddersfield you will develop a critical understanding of crime, its causes, its patterns, and the investigatory and policing work that society uses to respond to it. You will study criminological theory, the psychology of offending, the structure of policing and criminal justice in the UK, investigative methods, evidence and decision-making, and the broader social and political context in which crime and investigation operate. The programme encourages you to think critically about assumptions that are sometimes taken for granted in public debate about crime, including what counts as crime, who gets investigated, and whether the systems designed to address criminal behaviour are fair and effective. The three-year full-time programme develops both your analytical abilities and a practical understanding of how investigation and policing work in practice. Graduates go on to careers in policing, probation, the prison and court services, regulatory investigation, intelligence, social work, the voluntary sector, and research. The degree also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in criminology, criminal justice, or law, as well as for professional training routes into policing and investigation.
