About this course

Creative Arts and Korean is a combination that brings together studio-based creative practice and the deep cultural and linguistic study of one of the world's most dynamic societies. Korean is now one of the most studied languages in the world, driven not only by South Korea's economic significance but by the global reach of its cultural industries in film, music, literature and design. Pairing that with creative arts gives you a degree that is both culturally engaged and practically creative, developing your artistic voice alongside a serious engagement with a language and culture that is reshaping global popular culture. At the School of Oriental and African Studies, one of the world's leading institutions for the study of Asia and Africa, you will benefit from specialist Korean language teaching within a research environment that takes Korean history, politics, society and culture seriously. This four-year full-time programme begins with a foundation year, providing a structured introduction to both disciplines before you engage with the full curriculum. You will develop Korean language skills progressively while also building your creative practice across the arts, engaging with questions of aesthetics, cultural identity, representation and the relationship between tradition and innovation in both Western and East Asian contexts. Graduates of this distinctive combination are well placed for careers that connect the creative industries with the Asia-Pacific region. Opportunities include roles in arts organisations, cultural institutions, media, publishing, international relations, education, and business development in contexts where Korean language and cultural understanding are an advantage. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in Korean studies, Asian art, creative practice, or cultural management, and some move into academic or research careers.
