About this course

Writing is everywhere, as the description of this programme rightly notes: in the films we watch, the books we read, the social media posts we write, the marketing pitches that surround us and the news stories we receive. Creative and professional writing sits at the intersection of two dimensions of that ubiquitous activity: the creative, which develops original voice and craft across fiction, poetry, non-fiction and other forms; and the professional, which develops the practical writing skills that organisations, media, communications and culture industries need, from journalism and copywriting to content strategy and script development. At the University of Westminster, this part-time programme develops both dimensions of writing in a city that is one of the most significant centres of media, publishing, communications and creative industry in the world. You will develop your creative practice across a range of genres and forms, working with feedback and revision as central activities, while also building the professional writing skills and contextual understanding that make writing not just artistically developed but commercially and socially functional. Westminster's central London location places you close to publishers, broadcasters, agencies, magazines and the full range of organisations in which professional writers work. Graduates of creative and professional writing programmes go on to careers in publishing, journalism, copywriting, content creation, advertising and communications, broadcasting, education, arts administration, public relations and creative writing itself. The writing skills and critical thinking developed are applicable in virtually every field where clear, effective communication matters, which is to say almost everywhere. Further study in creative writing, English literature, journalism or communications is available for those who want to pursue academic careers or specialist professional paths in writing.
