About this course

Construction management is the discipline concerned with planning, coordinating, and overseeing construction projects from their initial conception through to completion. The built environment that surrounds us, from housing and schools to hospitals, transport infrastructure, and commercial buildings, exists because of the work of construction managers who bring together design, materials, workforce, finance, and time to deliver complex projects safely and effectively. The field demands a combination of technical knowledge, leadership capability, commercial awareness, and the ability to manage risk and complexity in fast-changing conditions. At the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, this three-year, full-time programme develops both the technical and the professional dimensions of construction management. You will study the principles of construction technology and building systems, project planning and programming, contract management, procurement, health and safety, and the financial management of construction projects. The programme also develops your understanding of sustainability in the built environment and the increasingly important role of digital tools such as building information modelling in how projects are designed and delivered. Northumbria has strong industry connections and the programme reflects the current professional landscape of UK construction. This programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, making it one of the most experientially rich construction management programmes available. The sandwich year and work placement give you extended professional experience within the industry, where practical skills, professional relationships, and site-level awareness are essential. The year abroad broadens your understanding of how construction is approached and managed in different national and regulatory contexts. Graduates go on to careers as construction managers, project managers, quantity surveyors, site managers, and development managers across the housebuilding, commercial, infrastructure, and public sector construction industries. Professional membership of relevant chartered bodies is a common progression.
