BSc Construction Management
About this course
Construction management is the discipline concerned with the planning, coordination, and delivery of construction projects, from individual buildings to large infrastructure schemes. It sits at the intersection of technical engineering knowledge and the management skills needed to lead complex, multi-stakeholder projects that must be delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality and safety standards. Construction managers are responsible for making those outcomes happen, managing contractors, coordinating specialists, handling risk, and keeping projects on track through the inevitable complications that arise. At the University College of Estate Management, this three-year programme is delivered by distance learning, making it available to students who cannot attend a campus in person. This mode of study is well suited to the construction and property professions, which often attract students who are already working in the industry and want to formalise and deepen their knowledge while continuing in their roles. You will study the technical and legal dimensions of construction, including safety regulations, procurement, and contract management, alongside the leadership, organisation, and project management skills that characterise effective construction managers. The programme prepares you to take responsibility for the delivery of complex projects, understanding how to manage the varied factors involved and bring a client's vision to completion. Construction management graduates work across the built environment sector, in contracting organisations, consultancies, client organisations, and the public sector. Roles include site manager, project manager, quantity surveyor, contract manager, and, with experience, director and senior leadership positions in construction companies and development organisations. The construction industry is consistently large and active, providing strong graduate employment prospects. For those interested in continuing their studies, postgraduate programmes in construction management, project management, and quantity surveying are widely available.
