MA Comparative Literature and Culture and French (5yrs)
About this course
Comparative literature and culture with French is a combination that situates the study of literature and culture in the broadest possible frame while also developing genuine linguistic and cultural depth in one of Europe's most important and widely spoken languages. Comparative literature examines writing across national and cultural boundaries, time periods, languages, and genres, asking what we learn about particular traditions by setting them alongside others and what the act of comparison itself reveals about how meaning is made in different contexts. French opens a literary, philosophical, and cultural tradition of extraordinary richness, from Montaigne and Racine to Balzac, Proust, and the Francophone writers of Africa, the Caribbean, and beyond. At the University of Aberdeen, this five-year full-time programme includes a year abroad that is integral to the degree, allowing you to develop your French language skills through immersion and to study literature and culture in a French-speaking environment. You will study literature from across the world and explore cultures and societies in and beyond the English-speaking world, developing a genuinely global perspective on how human beings use narrative, language, and cultural forms to understand their experience. The programme is taught by experts in languages, literatures, and cultures, and it develops your skills in literary analysis, cultural interpretation, linguistic proficiency, and independent research. Graduates of comparative literature and culture with French pursue careers in publishing, translation, journalism, broadcasting, education, arts administration, diplomacy, and the civil service. The French language skills add significant value in roles requiring engagement with Francophone markets, organisations, or communities, and the comparative and cultural breadth of the degree opens roles in international organisations and cultural institutions. Teaching French in schools is another common destination. Postgraduate study in comparative literature, French studies, translation, or cultural studies is a natural next step for those who wish to specialise or pursue academic research in literary and cultural fields.
