About this course

Clinical veterinary medicine is one of the most demanding and rewarding professional degrees available, training students to diagnose, treat and prevent disease across a wide range of animal species. Veterinary medicine requires mastery of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology and clinical skills, combined with the communication abilities to work effectively with animal owners and the professional judgement to make sound clinical decisions under pressure. It is a discipline that serves both animal welfare and public health, with veterinarians playing a critical role in food safety, disease surveillance and the management of zoonotic infections. At the University of Edinburgh, this five-year full-time programme is delivered at one of the world's leading veterinary schools, with access to outstanding clinical facilities and a broad range of animal species in teaching hospitals and practice environments. You will move from the biomedical and pre-clinical sciences in your early years through to full clinical rotations, gaining supervised experience across small animals, large animals, equine medicine, exotic species and production animal practice. The programme develops both your clinical technical skills and the professional judgement, communication ability and ethical reasoning that the veterinary profession demands. On qualifying, graduates are eligible to register with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and practise as veterinary surgeons. Career routes include small animal general practice, large animal and farm animal practice, equine medicine, exotic animal work, veterinary pathology, academic research, public health and regulatory roles in government and industry. Some graduates undertake further specialist training leading to postgraduate qualifications in specific clinical disciplines. The profession offers diverse opportunities and genuine vocational satisfaction, and Edinburgh-trained veterinarians are respected internationally.
