BA Classics
About this course
Classics is one of the oldest and most intellectually demanding of academic disciplines, encompassing the languages, literature, history, philosophy, art, and material culture of ancient Greece and Rome. It is also one of the most alive: the ancient world continues to speak urgently to contemporary politics, ethics, and culture, and the analytical skills it develops, including the close reading of complex texts in two classical languages, the interpretation of visual and material evidence, and the construction of rigorous historical arguments, are genuinely transferable to many professional contexts. At the University of Warwick the Department of Classics and Ancient History offers degrees that can be studied part-time, designed to reflect the varied interests of those coming to the discipline at different stages of life. The part-time mode makes the subject accessible to students who are combining study with work, caring responsibilities, or other commitments, and the department has shaped its programmes to serve that population while maintaining the intellectual standards for which Warwick is known. You will engage with both Greek and Latin texts and with the broader historical and cultural contexts of the ancient world, developing the analytical and linguistic skills that classical study demands. You will develop rigorous language skills, the ability to interpret primary evidence critically, and the capacity to write with precision and authority about complex historical and literary material. These are skills valued in research, education, law, journalism, and many other professional settings. Graduates pursue careers in education, heritage and museums, publishing, journalism, law, the civil service, and the cultural sector. Postgraduate study in classics, ancient history, classical archaeology, or ancient philosophy is a natural continuation for those who want to develop their expertise further or pursue academic research.
