BEng Civil Engineering with Transport
About this course
Civil engineering with transport brings together the foundations of civil engineering with a specialist focus on the planning, design and operation of transport systems and infrastructure. Transport engineering is one of the most socially consequential specialisms within civil engineering: how we move people and goods around cities, regions and countries profoundly affects economic productivity, carbon emissions, social equity and the quality of daily life. Understanding how to design, analyse and manage transport systems is therefore a discipline of considerable practical importance. The University of Leeds is particularly well placed to offer this programme. Leeds has one of the UK's leading transport research groups and sits at the centre of a city and region with complex and active transport challenges, providing an outstanding context for transport engineering study. This three-year full-time degree develops the core civil engineering sciences, including structural mechanics, geotechnics, hydraulics and materials, alongside specialist content in transport planning, highway engineering, traffic modelling, public transport systems and the environmental and social dimensions of transport policy. A sandwich year in industry is incorporated into the programme, providing extended professional experience within a civil engineering or transport organisation, alongside an embedded work placement, ensuring you graduate with both strong technical foundations and significant practical experience. The combination develops quantitative analytical skills, design competence, an understanding of how transport systems interact with land use and urban form, and the professional awareness needed to contribute to major infrastructure projects. Graduates pursue careers in transport consultancy, highway engineering, traffic management, transport planning, railway engineering and infrastructure project management across local authorities, national agencies and private consultancies. The degree provides a strong foundation for working towards chartered engineer status and for postgraduate study in transport engineering or planning.
