About this course

Civil engineering is the profession responsible for conceiving, designing and delivering the infrastructure on which modern society depends: roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, water supply and drainage systems, flood defences, coastal structures and the foundations of buildings. It is a discipline that combines rigorous engineering science with the practical knowledge and professional judgement needed to solve real problems in complex, real-world conditions. Civil engineers work at every stage from initial concept and design through to construction, operation and maintenance, and they must balance technical, economic, environmental and social considerations throughout. At the University of Derby, this four-year programme includes a foundation year for students who benefit from additional mathematical and scientific preparation before the main degree. You will develop expertise across the core areas of civil engineering, including structural analysis, geotechnics, hydraulics, materials, surveying, construction technology and project management. A sandwich placement year provides substantial professional experience in a civil engineering environment, and a year abroad and work placement opportunities extend the programme further, giving you a well-rounded preparation for professional practice that combines academic depth with real industry experience. Civil engineers are needed across infrastructure, construction, water, energy and the built environment more broadly. Graduates pursue careers with consulting engineering firms, main contractors, local and central government, utility companies and infrastructure clients. Career progression can lead to chartered engineer status with the Institution of Civil Engineers or other relevant bodies. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in structural, geotechnical or environmental engineering, or in construction project management. The demand for civil engineers across the UK and internationally is strong, and a degree with substantial placement experience gives graduates a well-recognised advantage in a competitive professional market.
