Civil engineering is the profession responsible for conceiving, designing and delivering the infrastructure on which modern society depends: roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, water supply and drainage systems, flood defences, coastal structures and the foundations of buildings. It is a discipline that combines rigorous engineering science with the practical knowledge and professional judgement needed to solve real problems in complex, real-world conditions. Civil engineers work at every stage from initial concept and design through to construction, operation and maintenance, and they must balance technical, economic, environmental and social considerations throughout. At the University of Derby, this four-year programme includes a foundation year for students who benefit from additional mathematical and scientific preparation before the main degree. You will develop expertise across the core areas of civil engineering, including structural analysis, geotechnics, hydraulics, materials, surveying, construction technology and project management.
