BEng Civil Engineering (with a Year in Industry)
About this course
Civil engineering is the discipline that designs, builds, and maintains the infrastructure on which modern society depends: roads, bridges, tunnels, water treatment systems, buildings, flood defences, and the complex urban environments in which most people now live. It is a profession that combines rigorous technical knowledge with a responsibility to the public and the environment, demanding both engineering excellence and ethical awareness of the social and ecological consequences of large-scale construction. At Queen's University Belfast, this four-year programme, which includes a year in industry, covers the full breadth of civil engineering: structures, foundations, water engineering, and project management, all taught by staff engaged in high-quality industry-linked research that is rooted in environmental impact considerations. You will tackle some of the defining challenges of the modern world, from achieving sustainable living in an increasingly urbanised society to managing scarce water and energy resources under climate pressure. The year in industry gives you direct professional experience working on real engineering projects, and a year abroad is also incorporated into the programme, broadening your international perspective on engineering practice. Work placement opportunities are embedded throughout. Civil engineering graduates are in sustained demand. The profession offers careers in structural design, geotechnical engineering, water and environmental engineering, highway and transport infrastructure, project management, construction management, and sustainable urban development. Employers include engineering consultancies, contractors, local and central government, water utilities, transport authorities, and international infrastructure organisations. Many graduates pursue Chartered Engineer status through professional institutions such as the ICE. Further study at master's or doctoral level is also a pathway, particularly for those interested in research or advanced specialist roles.
