BEng Civil Engineering
About this course
Civil engineering is one of the oldest engineering disciplines, and its products are all around you: the bridges you cross, the roads you drive on, the water systems that supply your home, and the flood defences that protect communities from extreme weather. Civil engineers design, build, and maintain the infrastructure that makes modern life possible, working across structural, geotechnical, environmental, and transportation engineering with a combination of mathematical rigour and practical problem-solving. At the University of Huddersfield, this three-year full-time programme gives you a thorough grounding in the principles and practice of civil engineering. You will study structural analysis, materials science, hydraulics, soil mechanics, and the management of construction projects, developing the technical knowledge needed to understand how complex infrastructure is designed and built safely. The programme includes a sandwich placement year, giving you the opportunity to work in a professional engineering environment alongside your studies and build the practical experience that employers value. A work placement element is also integrated into the course, reinforcing the connection between academic learning and professional practice. Civil engineering graduates are in consistent demand across both the public and private sectors. Careers span structural engineering, project management, infrastructure development, water and environmental engineering, transport planning, and construction management. Many graduates pursue professional accreditation and chartered engineer status, which opens further career opportunities in the UK and internationally. Postgraduate study in specialist areas such as structural engineering, geotechnics, environmental engineering, or project management is also a strong option for those who want to develop technical expertise or move into research and academic roles.
