MEng Civil Engineering
About this course
Civil engineering is the discipline responsible for designing, building and maintaining the physical infrastructure of society: roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, water treatment systems, drainage networks, ports, airports and the structural foundations of buildings. It is a profession with a direct and visible impact on how communities function, and it encompasses structural analysis, geotechnics, hydraulics, materials science, project management and environmental engineering. Civil engineers work at every scale, from local drainage schemes to major international infrastructure projects. At Edinburgh Napier, this five-year programme leads to an MEng qualification and includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study civil engineering at an international partner institution and develop a broader perspective on engineering practice in different national and regulatory contexts. You will study structural mechanics, fluid dynamics, geotechnics, transportation engineering, construction materials, project planning, environmental impact and professional engineering practice, developing both the technical analysis skills and the design competency that the profession requires. The MEng format provides the academic level required for the direct route to chartered engineer status through the Institution of Civil Engineers. The typical entry tariff is 168 UCAS points. Civil engineering graduates work in construction consultancies, contractors, local and national government, transport authorities, water companies, environmental agencies, energy companies and international development organisations. The profession is global in scope and there are substantial opportunities for international career development, which the year abroad in this programme begins to develop. Many graduates pursue chartered engineer status through the ICE, and some continue to postgraduate research in structural engineering, geotechnics, environmental engineering or construction management.
