About this course

Childhood and youth studies combined with education is a multidisciplinary degree that examines the lives, experiences and developmental contexts of children and young people, alongside an understanding of the educational systems and practices that shape those lives. Childhood and youth studies draws on sociology, history, social policy, politics and cultural studies to explore the diverse situations and challenges facing children across the UK and globally. Education brings in the theoretical and practical dimensions of how learning occurs and how educational institutions are structured, governed and experienced. At Liverpool Hope University this programme includes a foundation year, which develops the social scientific and analytical foundations you need before the main degree begins. The full programme runs over four years full time and includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work placement opportunities, giving you a rich combination of professional experience and international exposure. You will examine questions about children's rights, welfare, development, education, justice and cultural contexts, developing the understanding and skills to work effectively in roles that serve children and young people. Graduates are well placed for careers in social work, education, children's services, youth work, early years practice, community development, the voluntary sector and policy roles relating to children and young people. The combination of educational understanding and childhood studies breadth is particularly valuable in settings that require an integrated perspective on children's lives, such as schools, family support services and multi-agency children's teams. Postgraduate study in education, social work, childhood studies, social policy or early childhood education is a natural further route.
