About this course

Chemistry is the central science, connecting the physical principles of physics and mathematics to the biological complexity of life, and underpinning everything from the materials we build with to the medicines we take and the food we eat. It asks what substances are made of at the atomic and molecular level, how and why they react, and how their properties can be understood, manipulated, and put to use. Chemists work at the frontier of some of the most pressing challenges of our time, including energy security, climate change, disease treatment, and the sustainable use of natural resources. At Lincoln this three-year full-time programme develops the analytical and practical skills that chemistry careers require. You will study the major branches of the discipline, including organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry, building a comprehensive understanding of chemical principles and their applications. Laboratory work is central to the programme, developing your experimental technique, your ability to work safely and accurately, and your capacity to collect, interpret, and communicate data effectively. The curriculum is designed to prepare you for a wide range of science-related careers, giving you both the disciplinary depth and the transferable analytical skills that employers across science-based industries value. Graduates move into careers in the pharmaceutical, chemical, and biotechnology industries, forensic science, environmental analysis, food science, materials research, and scientific publishing. The analytical thinking and problem-solving skills that chemistry develops are also valued in finance, the civil service, and consulting. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study at master's or doctoral level, and chemistry is a strong foundation for graduate-entry medicine, dentistry, or law.
