About this course

Chemical engineering applies the principles of chemistry, physics and mathematics to the design and operation of industrial processes that transform raw materials into useful products. It is the discipline that underpins the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, fuels, food and drink, plastics, semiconductor materials and a vast range of other essential products, and chemical engineers are increasingly central to the development of cleaner processes, sustainable energy and green chemistry that can help reduce industry's environmental impact. At the University of Bath this three-year programme introduces you to the core principles and practices of the discipline within one of the UK's leading engineering schools. You will develop a thorough grounding in engineering mathematics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, reaction engineering and process design, alongside professional skills in research, communication and project management that employers in the sector look for. The programme is taught within a research-active environment, and you will encounter current thinking from faculty working on contemporary engineering problems throughout your studies. Bath's strong industry connections and its well-equipped laboratories provide a stimulating and practical environment for learning how engineering principles apply to real process challenges. The three-year BEng provides the academic foundation for graduate-level engineering work in chemical and process industries. Graduates work across a wide range of sectors including pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, food and drink manufacturing, oil and gas, petrochemicals, water treatment, energy, speciality chemicals and advanced materials. Graduate engineering roles lead, with experience, to professional registration as a chartered chemical engineer through the Institution of Chemical Engineers. Some graduates continue to postgraduate study at MEng level to deepen their technical expertise or to specialise in areas such as process safety, environmental engineering or pharmaceutical manufacturing before entering industry.
