MA Central & East European Studies/German
About this course
Central and East European studies combined with German is a degree that takes two overlapping intellectual territories and explores them together. Central and East European studies encompasses the histories, politics, cultures, and languages of a region stretching from the Baltic to the Balkans, a region whose twentieth century was defined by Nazi occupation, Soviet communism, the Holocaust, and the upheavals of 1989, and whose contemporary significance in European and global politics continues to grow. German, as the dominant language of the region's most powerful neighbour and as a language spoken in Austria and parts of Switzerland as well as Germany, connects directly to the political and cultural dynamics of Central Europe. At the University of Glasgow, this five-year full-time programme develops German language skills to a high level while also developing your expertise in the history, politics, culture, and languages of Central and East Europe. Glasgow offers a wide spectrum of German teaching, ranging from the eighteenth century to contemporary culture, alongside dedicated Central and East European expertise. The programme includes a sandwich year with work placement, giving you professional experience in a relevant context during your degree. Graduates are well placed for careers in European affairs, diplomacy, journalism, the civil service, international organisations, business, and academic research concerned with the region. The combination of German language competence and Central and East European expertise is particularly valuable in roles that require engagement with German-speaking partners alongside a broader understanding of the region's politics and history. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in German, European studies, international relations, or area studies, and the linguistic and regional expertise is a genuine differentiator in the academic and professional job market.
