MA Celtic Civilisation/Central & East European Studies
About this course
Celtic civilisation and Central and East European studies is an unusual and intellectually ambitious combination, bringing together the study of one of the ancient cultures of the British Isles and continental Europe with the study of the diverse nations, languages, and histories that make up Central and Eastern Europe. Celtic civilisation immerses you in the history of the Celts, the development of their societies, their literature, material culture, art, and religion from earliest times on the European continent to the present-day British Isles. Central and East European studies examines the histories, politics, cultures, and languages of a region that has been at the centre of some of the defining events of the twentieth century and that remains central to European politics today. At the University of Glasgow, this part-time programme allows you to engage with both fields at a pace that suits your existing commitments, building knowledge across two very different but intellectually complementary traditions. You will develop skills in historical analysis, cultural interpretation, and comparative thinking across both areas of the degree, drawing on primary sources and scholarly frameworks from Celtic studies and Central and East European scholarship. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study at an international partner institution in a region relevant to one or both of your subjects. Graduates from this combination go on to work in heritage, archival and library work, broadcasting, journalism, education, the civil and diplomatic service, and cultural organisations. The combination of deep historical and cultural knowledge with cross-cultural analytical skills is valued wherever understanding of European diversity, complexity, and history is needed. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in Celtic studies, Central European studies, history, or area studies, developing specialist expertise for academic or professional roles.
