MA Celtic and Linguistics
About this course
Celtic and linguistics is a combination that brings together one of the world's oldest and most distinctive language families with the scientific study of language itself. Celtic languages, which include Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, Irish, Breton, Cornish, and Manx, are among the indigenous languages of the British Isles and of north-western France, and they carry literary and cultural traditions stretching back more than a thousand years. Linguistics asks how language works as a system: its sounds, structures, meanings, and the ways in which language is acquired, used, and changes over time. Studying Celtic languages through the lens of linguistics gives you both deep knowledge of these specific languages and a comparative, analytical understanding of what makes them distinctive and what they share with other language families. At the University of Edinburgh, this four-year programme includes a year abroad, which typically involves time in a Celtic-speaking community or at an institution with Celtic studies provision, giving you immersion in the living use of one of these languages alongside the academic study of Celtic and linguistics. Edinburgh is one of the leading centres for Celtic studies in the world, with strengths in Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, and the broader Celtic tradition, and the linguistics department is internationally distinguished. The combination reflects Edinburgh's particular strengths and its commitment to the study of minority and endangered languages. Graduates of Celtic and linguistics programmes work in language teaching, particularly in Welsh and Gaelic medium education, language planning and policy, broadcasting (the BBC and S4C both have Welsh and Gaelic services), community development, academic research, and cultural organisations concerned with Celtic languages and heritage. The linguistics training opens doors in computational linguistics, speech technology, and language analysis, and postgraduate study in Celtic studies, linguistics, or related fields is a natural further step.
