BSc Business Economics with Placement Year
About this course
Business economics sits at the intersection of economic theory and the real decisions that firms, markets, and managers must make. Where pure economics asks how markets function in principle, business economics focuses on how organisations respond to incentives, competition, costs, and consumer behaviour in practice. This makes it a highly applied discipline, grounded in rigorous analytical tools but always attentive to the complexity of commercial reality. At the University of Reading, this four-year programme builds your understanding of microeconomic and macroeconomic theory and then puts those frameworks to work in the context of business strategy, pricing, labour markets, and financial performance. You will develop skills in quantitative analysis, data interpretation, and economic modelling, and you will learn to evaluate the conditions under which firms thrive or struggle. Importantly, this programme includes a placement year, giving you the opportunity to spend a significant period working in an organisation and bringing the theoretical perspectives you have built into direct contact with professional practice. That experience consistently helps students make better sense of their final-year studies and enter the graduate market with greater confidence and credibility. Business economics graduates are sought by employers across banking, consultancy, financial services, public policy, and corporate strategy. The analytical rigour of the degree is valued wherever organisations need people who can assess evidence, model outcomes, and give clear economic reasoning to difficult questions. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in economics, finance, management, or public policy.
