BA Business and Entrepreneurship
About this course
Business and entrepreneurship prepares graduates both to work effectively within established organisations and to create and develop new ventures of their own. Entrepreneurship is increasingly recognised not just as a route to self-employment but as a mindset and set of skills that are valuable in any business context, whether you are launching a start-up, driving innovation within a larger organisation or developing a social enterprise. Combining business fundamentals with entrepreneurship training gives you both the commercial foundations and the creative, risk-taking orientation that new ventures require. At Northumbria University in Newcastle you will study this three-year full-time programme, developing core business skills in strategy, finance, marketing, operations and management alongside a focused engagement with entrepreneurial thinking, opportunity recognition, business model development, venture financing and the practical challenges of starting and growing a business. The programme includes a sandwich year in industry, providing extended professional experience in a business environment, as well as a year abroad and an embedded work placement, ensuring you graduate with a combination of academic knowledge, entrepreneurial orientation and substantial professional and international experience. Northumbria's strong connections to the North East business community provide a stimulating context for applied entrepreneurial learning. The degree develops commercial analytical skills, creative problem-solving, the ability to build and present a business case, resilience and the capacity to work independently under uncertainty. These are capabilities that serve both employment and entrepreneurship. Graduates start businesses, join start-ups, work in business development and innovation roles within larger organisations, pursue careers in management, marketing, finance and consulting, or move into social enterprise and the third sector. Postgraduate study in entrepreneurship, innovation management or MBA programmes is a natural option for those wishing to develop further.
