BSc Building Surveying
About this course
Building surveying is a professional discipline concerned with the full lifecycle of buildings, from their design and construction through maintenance, adaptation, renovation and ultimately demolition. Building surveyors work across a broader range of activities than many other construction professionals, which is why they are sometimes described as the generalists of the built environment. Their expertise spans building pathology and defect diagnosis, contract administration, project management, specification and cost control, sustainable retrofitting, heritage conservation and the assessment of building condition for a wide range of clients. At the University College of Estate Management, this programme is delivered through distance learning, making it particularly accessible to students who are already working in related sectors and wish to gain a professional qualification while continuing their careers. Building surveyors must develop both the technical knowledge to understand how buildings work and fail and the professional skills to advise clients effectively, manage projects and navigate the regulatory frameworks that govern construction and property. The diversity of projects that building surveyors encounter means that no two days are the same and the professional challenges are consistently varied and stimulating. Graduates of building surveying programmes typically work towards Chartered status through the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, which is the primary professional body for the discipline. Career destinations include roles in building consultancies, local authorities, housing associations, property management companies, contractors and specialist conservation practices. Building surveyors who develop expertise in sustainable retrofit and energy efficiency are in particular demand as the built environment faces the challenge of decarbonisation. Many graduates move into project management, contract administration or specialist heritage and conservation roles, and some progress into senior leadership or expert advisory positions within the construction and property sector.
