BEng Building Services Engineering
About this course
Building services engineering is the discipline concerned with the systems that make buildings function as safe, healthy, comfortable, and energy-efficient environments. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, electrical power and lighting, water supply and drainage, fire safety, communication systems, and renewable energy installation are all within its scope. As the built environment faces growing pressure to reduce its environmental impact, building services engineers are increasingly at the forefront of designing the systems that make buildings sustainable as well as functional. At Leeds Beckett University, this part-time degree provides a thorough grounding in the principles and practice of building services engineering. You will learn to develop systems and solve the technical problems that provide safe and healthy environments in which people can live and work, working across the full range of engineering services that modern buildings require. The programme is structured to develop both the theoretical foundations of engineering and the applied problem-solving skills that professional practice demands. A sandwich year gives you extended professional experience in a working engineering environment, while a year abroad broadens your technical and cultural perspective. Work placement is embedded in the degree throughout, ensuring you develop genuine professional experience alongside academic knowledge. Studying part-time allows you to build your engineering qualifications while working, which is a common and valued path into the profession and one that the Leeds Beckett programme is designed to support. Graduates go on to careers as building services engineers, M&E engineers, energy consultants, sustainability engineers, and commissioning engineers in consultancies, contracting firms, local authorities, and property organisations. The degree provides a foundation for progression to chartered engineer status with relevant professional bodies. Postgraduate study in building services, sustainable energy, or related engineering disciplines is also a natural route for those who want to specialise further.
