BSc Biomedical Science (with Foundation Year)
About this course
Biomedical Science is the discipline that bridges fundamental biological research and its application in medicine, healthcare and diagnostics. It examines how the human body works at the cellular and molecular level, how disease arises and progresses, and how laboratory analysis contributes to diagnosis, monitoring and treatment. It encompasses haematology, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, histopathology and molecular diagnostics, making it a broad and rigorously scientific training for careers in healthcare science and biological research. At Teesside University this four-year full-time degree includes a foundation year, giving you additional time to build the scientific knowledge and laboratory skills you need before entering the main programme. The foundation year provides a supportive entry point into demanding scientific study, ensuring you are well prepared for the rigour of the degree that follows. You will develop practical competence in laboratory techniques alongside theoretical understanding of human biology, disease mechanisms and the analytical methods used in clinical and research settings. Graduates from Biomedical Science degrees go on to careers across the healthcare and life sciences sectors. Many pursue registration as Biomedical Scientists with the Health and Care Professions Council, working in NHS laboratories or private diagnostic facilities in roles including clinical biochemistry, haematology, blood transfusion, histopathology and microbiology. Others find positions in pharmaceutical companies, medical device firms, research institutes and biotechnology organisations. The degree also provides a strong scientific foundation for postgraduate study in biomedical science, molecular biology, clinical biochemistry, immunology or related fields, and for further training in medicine, pharmacy or related healthcare professions.
