About this course

Biomedical science is concerned with understanding how the human body functions in health and what happens when disease disrupts those processes. It applies the methods of biology, chemistry, biochemistry and physiology to the investigation of illness and injury, developing the scientific knowledge base that underpins clinical diagnosis, medical research and the development of treatments. Biomedical scientists work in NHS and private laboratories, carrying out the tests that clinicians use to diagnose and monitor conditions from anaemia and infection to cancer and diabetes, and in research settings where new diagnostic and therapeutic tools are developed. At the University of Kent, this three-year programme explores the science behind diagnosing and treating disease, with a focus on real-world application and modern research. You will develop an understanding of human physiology, cellular and molecular biology, haematology, clinical biochemistry, immunology, microbiology and pathology, building the knowledge base across the range of laboratory sciences that clinical biomedical science encompasses. The programme develops both theoretical understanding and the practical laboratory skills that a career in biomedical science requires, in a research-active environment that connects teaching to current scientific investigation. Graduates in biomedical science pursue careers in NHS hospital laboratories, blood services, public health organisations, pharmaceutical and biotechnology research and development, clinical trials, science communication and education. Many graduates go on to professional registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as registered biomedical scientists, which is the professional qualification required for laboratory roles in the NHS. Postgraduate study in biomedical science, clinical biochemistry, haematology, immunology or a related clinical laboratory science is available for those who want to develop specialist expertise or move into research or academic roles.
