About this course

Biomedical science applies the methods of biology, chemistry, and physiology to the understanding of human health and disease. It encompasses the laboratory disciplines that are central to clinical medicine: haematology, clinical chemistry, medical microbiology, histopathology, immunology, and blood transfusion science. Biomedical scientists generate the results that clinicians rely on to diagnose disease, monitor treatment, and make decisions about patient care. The discipline requires both rigorous scientific training and the ability to work within the exacting quality standards that clinical laboratory environments demand. At Bradford this three-year full-time programme is available with a foundation year for students who would benefit from additional scientific preparation before the main degree. Across the full programme you will study the core biomedical science disciplines, developing theoretical knowledge of human physiology, pathology, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, and molecular biology alongside the practical laboratory skills that the profession requires. Bradford has built a strong reputation for the support it provides to students, creating an environment in which academic and pastoral care work alongside each other to ensure your success. The academic community at Bradford is known for treating students as colleagues, investing in your development as a scientist and a professional. Biomedical science graduates work in NHS hospital laboratories, public health laboratories, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, and research institutions. Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a biomedical scientist is required for NHS clinical laboratory roles, and many graduates pursue this registration as a direct route into healthcare careers. The scientific skills developed during the degree are also valued in quality assurance, regulatory affairs, science communication, and research. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in biomedical science, molecular diagnostics, or research-focused programmes, or use the degree as a foundation for graduate-entry medicine or other clinical professions.
