BSc Biology
About this course
Biology is the science of life in all its forms, from the molecular machinery inside cells through the behaviour and ecology of organisms to the large-scale patterns of biodiversity and evolution that span millions of years. It encompasses genetics, cell biology, physiology, ecology, evolution, and the quantitative and experimental methods that allow biologists to ask and answer questions about living systems with rigour and precision. A degree in biology provides a comprehensive foundation for virtually any career in the life sciences, while also developing the analytical and critical thinking skills that are valued in many other fields. At the University of Leeds, this full-time, three-year programme allows you to personalise your degree as you progress, choosing to focus on human biology, conservation, animal behaviour, genetic engineering, or any one of the other study areas that Leeds has to offer. You will build a holistic understanding of life on Earth, from genes through to behaviour, from evolutionary processes to ecological systems, developing both the theoretical knowledge and the practical laboratory and fieldwork skills that biology requires. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you substantial professional and international experience before you graduate. The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points. Biology graduates are employed across a remarkably wide range of sectors. Pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, NHS clinical laboratories, environmental and ecological consultancies, conservation organisations, food and agricultural industries, healthcare, teaching, science communication, and research institutions all recruit biology graduates. The flexibility to specialise within the Leeds programme means you can align your degree closely with the career direction you have in mind. Postgraduate study in molecular biology, ecology, conservation, biomedical science, medicine, or a related field provides a natural continuation for those who wish to go deeper.
