BSc Biology
About this course
Biology is the science of life in all its extraordinary complexity, examining how organisms are built and how they function, how they interact with each other and with their environments, how they have evolved over billions of years of natural selection, and how the diversity of living things on Earth came to be as remarkable as it is. It is a discipline that spans from the molecular and cellular levels through whole organisms to ecosystems, and its methods encompass laboratory experimentation, fieldwork, mathematical modelling, and comparative analysis. At Royal Holloway, University of London, this three-year, full-time programme gives you a sound understanding of the structure, function, evolution, and diversity of living organisms and the interactions between them. You will develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills across the full range of biological disciplines, from genetics and cell biology through physiology and ecology to evolutionary biology and environmental science. The programme includes a sandwich placement year for extended professional experience, a year abroad to broaden your scientific horizons, and work placement integrated throughout the course. Royal Holloway's location, at the edge of London's commuter belt with access to both the Surrey countryside and the life sciences community of Greater London, provides excellent opportunities for fieldwork and professional contact. A typical entry tariff of 120 points reflects an accessible admissions profile for a scientifically rigorous programme. Graduates from biology programmes go on to careers in environmental consultancy, conservation, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, ecology, public health, clinical laboratory science, teaching, and science communication. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in ecology, genetics, conservation biology, microbiology, or related fields, developing specialist expertise for research or professional practice.
