Beauty therapy is the practice of providing a range of cosmetic and therapeutic treatments designed to improve the appearance and wellbeing of clients. It encompasses skincare, massage, nail care, hair removal, makeup and specialist treatments such as electrolysis, and it sits at the intersection of aesthetic practice and holistic wellness. Practitioners require both technical skill and strong interpersonal ability, working closely with clients to understand their needs, manage expectations and deliver treatments that make a genuine and visible difference to how people feel about themselves. At the University of the Highlands and Islands you will study beauty therapy on a part-time basis, developing the practical skills and theoretical knowledge needed for professional practice in a programme that fits around other commitments. You will learn treatment techniques, anatomy and physiology relevant to beauty therapy, health and safety standards, client consultation skills and the professional ethics of practice. The part-time mode offers flexibility while maintaining the structured progression through skills and knowledge that professional competency requires. Graduates of beauty therapy programmes work in beauty salons, spas and wellness centres, hotels and resorts, medical aesthetics clinics, cruise ships, fashion and media environments, and as self-employed practitioners building their own client base. The profession offers real flexibility, with many practitioners running their own businesses or building mobile treatment services alongside other work. Advanced skills in areas such as massage, electrolysis or advanced skincare treatments expand the scope of practice and earning potential. Some graduates go on to further study in aesthetics, dermatology, wellness or health and social care, and the combination of practical skill and client care knowledge provides a foundation for a range of health and beauty related career paths.
