About this course

Composition is the art of creating original music, shaping sound, silence, texture and time into forms that communicate and endure. It draws on deep musical knowledge and technical craft alongside an imagination that can conceive of new sonic worlds and the skill to realise them on paper and in performance. Studying composition at the Royal Academy of Music, one of the world's most distinguished conservatoires, places you in a community of exceptional musicians and teachers, working at the highest level of musical education and performance. This four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the chance to study composition in a different musical culture or institutional context. You will develop your compositional voice through sustained creative work across a range of genres, forces and forms, from chamber music to orchestral writing, from electronic and electroacoustic music to cross-disciplinary projects. You will receive individual tuition and feedback on your work, study music history and theory, develop your ear and analytical skills, and engage with the broader musical life of the Academy, attending and participating in performances at the highest professional level. You will be expected to produce a body of substantial original work across the degree. Graduates from the composition pathway pursue careers across the full range of the music profession. Many work as composers, writing for the concert hall, screen, stage, installation and a growing range of interdisciplinary contexts. Others combine composing with teaching, conducting, music directing, arranging or work in music publishing, production and technology. The Academy's reputation and networks are significant assets, and many graduates build careers in the music industry and cultural sector that draw on both their compositional skills and the broader musical training the degree provides.
