BSc Astrophysics with Foundation Year
About this course
Astrophysics is the branch of physics that applies physical laws and mathematical tools to the study of the universe beyond the Earth, from the nearest stars and our own solar system to the large-scale structure of the cosmos. It asks how stars form, live, and die; how galaxies come together and evolve; what dark matter and dark energy are; and what happened in the moments after the Big Bang. These questions test physical theory at its most extreme, and addressing them demands the full toolkit of mathematical physics alongside the ability to interpret data from the most sensitive instruments humans have ever built. At the University of Keele, this four-year full-time degree with a foundation year is accredited and combines a strong foundation in core physics principles with the study of cutting-edge astrophysics topics. The foundation year builds the mathematical and scientific preparation needed before the main programme begins. You will undertake advanced project work using astronomical data from world-class ground-based and satellite missions, and the on-campus observatory provides opportunities for practical observational work. The programme develops problem-solving, experimental, programming, and teamworking skills. The typical entry tariff is 88 points. Astrophysics graduates develop quantitative and analytical skills that are highly valued far beyond the field itself. Many go on to careers in data science, financial modelling, technology, engineering, and research, where the ability to handle large datasets and build mathematical models is in demand. Others pursue postgraduate research in astrophysics, cosmology, or physics, aiming for careers in academic or commercial research. The combination of technical rigour and breadth of perspective makes astrophysics graduates attractive to a wide range of employers.
